Scalp care is skincare. Unfortunately, that being said my scalp does not seem to care at all what I do to it. For it generally does what it wants — which is produce an infuriating amount of oil.
My hair has no volume. It pretty much molds exactly to my head. I can wash and dry it in the morning and wear it down with no guarantee that it will not be greasy and flat by the evening. If I do not wash it the next day, I must put it up, or I will look like Severus Snape.
I have tried shampoo after shampoo, dry shampoo after dry shampoo. I know you’re supposed to train your hair by not washing it for a week, but when the hell am I supposed to do that? I bleached my hair because I read that blonde hair does not look as oily (bad, very bad idea). Nothing seems to drastically change the fact that my hair gets greasy very quickly and does not hold volume or God forbid a curl. Having voluminous hair is on my top ten list of things I’d want if I could have anything in the world. To show the seriousness of this issue, also on that list: a paid in full, West Village townhouse… I just want my hair to always look like this:
Right now I’ve gone back to the Bumble and Bumble Pret a Powder, which cuts the grease a bit, but tends to leave a white residue that is very difficult to fully get rid of. I also have the Oribe Dry Shampoo, but I feel like it acts more as a finishing spray, post blow-out than a product that reduces grease or creates volume. It could never give me another presentable, non-wash hair day. Beyond that, even when I do put the effort into a blow dry, my hair often falls into the sleek Cher-esque look rather than reaching the bounce I desire. I’ve used Fekkai Root Lift, Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray, and Amika Brooklyn Bombshell among others. I’d say the Fekkai is the best for what I want, but the bar is low.
Then there is the hot roller conversation. In college, I got a set of hot rollers. They weren’t very expensive and obviously not the best quality, but I could see potential. So after grad, I went for the T3 Hot Rollers. I use the lower setting, and even then, I feel like I’m burning my hair a tad. Yikes. Though the hold is better than curling my hair, which I hate and never do. I need to manipulate them to get the root lift I desire without sauteeing my scalp. They’re much stronger than my first set. However, I only hot roll my hair if I’m going somewhere. It’s not an everyday activity. I know it’s not possible for my hair to look amazing every single day, but I’d like some sort of in-between. It seems like there is not answer for that. Either wash and dry + effort, or it will look like trash. Guess I’ll be continuously wasting my money trying every volume product on the market until a solution comes along…
